Abstract
I consumatori chiedono sempre più trasparenza nell'etichettatura degli alimenti poiché vogliono maggiori e migliori informazioni su ciò che mangiano e da dove proviene il loro cibo. Negli ultimi decenni sono stati sviluppati diversi indici alimentari per promuovere un'alimentazione sana con l'obiettivo di ridurre alcune malattie come l'obesità, il cancro, il diabete. La dieta mediterranea è nota per essere uno dei modelli alimentari più salutari ed è associata a una minore incidenza di mortalità per tutte le cause, ed è anche correlata a una minore incidenza di malattie cardiovascolari, diabete di tipo 2, alcuni tipi di cancro e malattie neurodegenerative, ma manca ancora un indice completo che quantifichi la mediterraneità degli alimenti. La vera sfida europea è identificare un sistema di etichettatura uniforme per tutta l'Europa che promuova uno stile di vita sano. Questo articolo descrive lo sviluppo del Med Index (MI), un indice che mira a misurare con precisione il grado di mediterraneità degli alimenti. Il MI integra contemporaneamente le caratteristiche nutrizionali e di sostenibilità degli alimenti. Il MI può fornire una base oggettiva per l'uso del marchio “Mediterraneo” sui prodotti alimentari, che può in definitiva promuovere l'adesione alla dieta mediterranea incoraggiando i produttori a realizzare prodotti alimentari più sani e sostenibili. La crescente attenzione dei consumatori verso cibi salutari per una migliore aspettativa e qualità di vita può essere un fattore utile per promuovere l'applicabilità dei principi della nutrizione di precisione attraverso scelte consapevoli.
